Short story about Jesus Loves Me

JESUS LOVES ME.....an historic incident about this popular song....

In 1943 in the Solomon Islands, John F. Kennedy's PT-109 was rammed and sunk. Native Islanders Biuka Gasa and Eroni Kumana rushed to the site to help rescue survivors. But they were unable to determine if the men were friendly American allies, or their German enemies.

Much to their delight one of the US soldiers began humming Jesus Loves Me.....a song the Islanders had learned from Christian missionaries, and they were able to join in the singing, in their own tongue, and were assured that these men were indeed important allies and should be rescued and cared for!

Note: Jesus Loves Me was written in the 1860's and was sung during our own Civil War by weary and heart-sick soldiers.  The hymn tune was titled "China" and was the inspiration for the naming of the town, China, Maine. The good news of the gospel gives us strength and comfort during all kinds of tribulation and warfare - earthly and spiritual!
